Addiction to alcohol is the center of many comedy routines done by some very famous comedians but an addiction to alcohol is not a laughing matter. The other term commonly used for an addiction to alcohol is alcoholism. The addiction to alcohol is classified as a disease and there are many avenues available for a potential cure to this horrible disease. The problem is that the alcoholism by its very definition makes curing it extremely difficult. Many times an intervention by loved ones is required to force the person to get help for their alcoholism. Alcoholism, the physical addiction to alcohol, is characterized by the continuing abuse of alcohol even after it has become extremely apparent that the abuse is causing the person negative effects. No matter how many times the person is told, how much in their life they lose, or how low in life they fall they will inevitably find excuses other than their addiction to alcohol and they will continue to justify the consumption of alcohol until some drastic event happens. be a feeling of low self esteem. A person feels they are inadequate in some way so they use alcohol as their version of an equalizer. The depth of the lack of self esteem can go hand in hand with the severity of the dependency on alcohol. Society has also placed some pressure on drinking as a way to fit in to society today. Through advertising and popular culture people with either low self esteem, or a strong desire to fit in, may feel that they need to drink in order to fit in. It may seem like a kind of a weak excuse but these two causes are usually only part of the problem for the alcoholic. Alcoholism can also be cause be a chemical imbalance within the person’s mind. A person with a chemical imbalance may feel the constant compulsion to drink that they cannot stop without the proper treatment. Genetics is also considered a big cause of alcoholism. There is an estimate that nearly 50 percent of all alcoholism cases can be traced back to something in the family genetics of the patient that causes them to feel the need to drink excessively. Whatever the cause, alcoholism is a big problem in our society today and finding cures for the disease of alcoholism is important work. Many people suffer from the disease and treatment is the only way to help them improve their quality of life.
